Bio

Joy has loved to dance since she was a child.  Her formal training began with ballet which she studied seriously from 4th grade through high school.  She discovered Modern Dance in college through her study with Ze’eva Cohen and Jim May at Princeton University where she earned a BA in Near Eastern Studies with a concentration in Modern Dance. Joy went on to earn her MFA in Dance at Connecticut College. Her own experience of the healing power of dance and movement and her interest in helping children and adults address developmental, emotional, and learning problems through dance and movement, led her to return to school to earn her Master’s of Science in Dance Movement Therapy from Hunter College.

Joy is a board certified Dance Movement Therapist (BC-DMT) and nationally certified counselor (NCC). She also has certifications in Spacial Dynamics® Level I, as a Waldorf Educational Support/Extra Lesson Teacher, and as a Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner (WDP). She has received related training in Child Centered Play Therapy, dynamic play therapy with Dennis McCarthy, Sensory Integration therapy and Body-Mind Centering®.

Joy brings a wealth of experience to her private practice. She has been practicing DMT for over 30 years and teaching dance for even longer. She has worked as a dance movement therapist at the Rock Brook School, Princeton House, and the Woodbridge Developmental Center. Locally, she has taught dance and creative movement at the Princeton Ballet School, the Arts Council of Princeton, and the Princeton YWCA. She was a member of Geulah Abrahams' DanceWorks dance company for 10 years as well as performing her own solo repertory, and still continues to choreograph and occasionally perform.

Prior to the Pandemic, Joy worked for 14 years
at the Waldorf School of Princeton as an educational support teacher with the Extra Lesson and movement therapy, and as a Wilson reading/spelling tutor. The Extra Lesson and movement therapy work is directly related to her experience and training as a dance movement therapist with children with learning challenges. Becoming a Wilson reading/spelling tutor arose out of the combined circumstance of the school recognizing some of their students' need for this extra support and her personal involvement in supporting her son's journey with dyslexia.

Joy
began her Movement with Joy private practice in 2012.
